Suicide is a tragic and preventable loss – for family and friends, communities and the State of Idaho. In 2006, Idaho lost 218 people to suicide. But the loss extends well beyond the suicide victims. Approximately 15 friends and families are seriously impacted by each suicide, often becoming at-risk for suicide themselves. Compared to the nation, Idaho consistently ranks in the top 9 for overall suicides and ranked #3 for teen suicides. The cost of this problem in human terms is beyond comprehension.
Many people in Idaho work to prevent suicide and provide support to the survivors. Idaho is fortunate to have the involvement of such groups as the Idaho Council on Suicide Prevention, the Idaho Youth Suicide Prevention Project and the Suicide Prevention Action Network of Idaho. Countless teachers, counselors, clergy, mental health professionals and many others also work in suicide prevention.
