Impact of Suicides in Idaho

Idaho has consistently ranked as one of the top ten states for suicide as the leading cause of death. Since 2003 suicide has been the eighth or ninth leading cause of death for Idahoans within the state. Additionally, suicide ranks as high as the third and fourth leading cause of death in Idaho depending on which populations are being reviewed. Regardless of any specific population group, the impact of suicides in Idaho is far reaching with research showing that for every suicide 15 to 22 people are directly impacted.

Idaho Suicide Rankings

The data below was developed in conjunction with the Idaho Bureau of Vital Statistics from information that is provided on the Certificate of Death. It is widely understood that suicides are under reported in the state. However, the BVS has the most consistently available information. The ISPRP is grateful for their assistance. The data presented here  helps to provide an epidemiological view of suicide in Idaho from 2003 to 2007 & 2008. This data, and the data throughout the Idaho Suicide Prevention Research Project’s website, is intended to support the suicide prevention community in Idaho.
Additional general facts on Idaho Suicide and on the four highest risk populations in Idaho are also available on the Idaho Suicide Data & Research page here.
